Who We Are.

Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization devoted to dropout prevention. The overall mission of Communities in Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Communities In Schools-Baytown joined the CIS network in 1993.  We at CIS-Baytown are proud to be a part of the nation's leading network of community-based organizations designed to help kids succeed in school and prepare for life. CIS-Baytown provides services to students and their families living in Goose Creek CISD, Barbers Hill ISD, Channelview ISD, Crosby ISD and Sheldon ISD. All school districts are located in East Harris County or West Chambers County.

CISB provides services to students in grades K-12.  During the 2009- 2010 program year a total of 2,002 students received cased managed services.  Of the students receiving CISB services 51% were female and 49% male, 31% African American 45% Hispanic, 19% White and 1% other.   A large majority of CISB students, 77%, were considered economically disadvantaged.  A total of 612, had special characteristics such as alternative placements, English as a Second Language, Homeless, incarcerated parents or pregnant.

CISB places a special emphasis on students identified as at-risk based on the Texas Education Agency (TEA) definition of factors that place students at risk of dropping out of school.  Although services are available to all students CISB provides ongoing direct services to approximately 10% to 20% of the student population attending schools receiving CISB services. 

CISB places a spherical emphasis on students with the greatest risk factors that lead to dropping out of school which includes but not limited to students who are economically disadvantaged, have limited English speaking skills be the first in their families to graduate or attend college or come from homes with limited academic resources.
