Why It Matters.
More than two million Texas students are at-risk of dropping out. This is especially prevalent in the Hispanic and African-American populations. These two populations account for over 75% of all students who drop out in the state of Texas.
Approximately forty percent of students in the freshman class will not graduate in four years.
- A growing number of students appear to lack basic social skills and have an apathetic attitude toward education.
Texas dropouts:
• are six times more likely to become incarcerated and account for 2/3 of all inmates in the Texas prison system.
• lose approximately $366,000 in lifetime earning potential and typically earn half the income of high school graduates.
• are three times more likely to live in poverty than high school graduates and are 75% more likely to be unemployed.
The only way we can be successful in helping students conquer these challenges is to stay focused on our mission: “To champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.” Little is accomplished without assistance from members in the community.
