Why It Matters.
More than two million Texas students are at-risk of dropping out. This is especially prevalent in the Hispanic and African-American populations. These two populations account for over 75% of all students who drop out in the state of Texas.
Approximately forty percent of students in the freshman class will not graduate in four years.
- A growing number of students appear to lack basic social skills and have an apathetic attitude toward education.
Texas dropouts:
• are six times more likely to become incarcerated and account for 2/3 of all inmates in the Texas prison system.
• lose approximately $366,000 in lifetime earning potential and typically earn half the income of high school graduates.
• are three times more likely to live in poverty than high school graduates and are 75% more likely to be unemployed.
